Generating Operational Deflection Shapes with Digital Image Correlation

In recent years, digital image correlation (DIC) measurement systems have seen worldwide adoption for an ever-increasing number of applications. Non-contact strain measurement systems have gained widespread popularity due to the overall robustness, versatility, ease of use, accuracy and cost savings they produce. Although DIC has traditionally been used mostly for quasi-static and dynamic applications, the availability of enhanced analysis software has led to a dramatic increase in the use of DIC systems for a variety of new applications. One of these applications includes dynamic vibration operational deflection shapes (ODS) measurements using high-speed image data to characterize vibration behavior utilizing a Fast Fourier Transformation (FFT) to generate amplitude/phase vs. frequency data with full-field 3D visualization. This presentation gives a detailed walkthrough of how to work within Correlated Solutions' VIC-3D software to generate ODS data from DIC data. The focus is on the processing options, the software’s current capabilities and what the future holds for this measurement method. This presentation uses a PC fan with large in-plane rotations as an example but any sample with a speckle pattern could have been used.
