DIC at Extremes

Dr. Calvin Stewart and his team at The Ohio State University are working at the extremes. In 2022, Dr. Stewart was named director of the Materials at Extremes Lab (MATX), and immediately he began to assemble the tools and personnel needed to push the boundaries of “advanced manufacturing, mechanical testing, and theoretical mechanics of materials subject to thermal, mechanical, and chemical extremes.”

We are excited to report that the capabilities of this impressive lab have recently increased with the installation of the powerful VIC-3D digital image correlation system. Dr. Stewart’s brief was simple; he needed an accurate, non-contact, optical measurement system for extremely high-temperature materials testing, and the Correlated Solutions VIC-3D Infrared module was ideal. We’ll have more to share when the real testing commences, but for now, here are some images from the 2-day training session in Columbus last month.
