Correlated Solutions VIC-3D + Pharsighted Ultra High-Speed Cameras

The VIC-3D HS system from Correlated Solutions is a powerful measurement tool which combines state-of-the-art digital image correlation software with the latest high-speed cameras from around the world. As we prepare for the release later this year of VIC-3D 10, we are eager to put the best high-speed cameras through their paces to see how they perform. Recently, we welcomed Bill Spinelli from Photron to the Correlated Solutions headquarters in Columbia, South Carolina for an introduction to the impressive new Pharsighted E9-80S ultra high-speed camera.

The video presented here depicts a simple tensile test captured with a pair of Pharsighted E9-80S cameras. It was produced entirely within the VIC-3D software using the iris graphic engine and was exported in 4K.

The Pharsighted E9-80S is the world’s first backside-illuminated, full-frame high speed camera, and it shows great potential with the VIC-3D digital image correlation system. We deployed an MTS test frame to conduct this tensile test on a 3D printed PLA (Polylactic acid) plastic sample with a hole to observe the crack propagation at 544,000 frames per second (fps). We were impressed with the image quality, light sensitivity, and overall low DIC data noise produced by these cameras, and we are excited about and confident in pairing these cameras with VIC-3D for research applications. We also successfully demonstrated the cameras' capability at 1,000,000 fps by performing a 3D DIC test on a brittle composite sample undergoing a short-beam-sheer dynamic loading.
